Refrigerator Prayers

Prayer is sacred. It is conversation with the Holy One, our God. Some printed prayers mean so much to us at a particular time in our lives that we make copies or rip them out of printed matter and stick them on our refrigerator. They bear testimony that God is working in our lives. Refrigerator Prayers for Ordinary People provides daily prayers for those times when you need help getting started with your own prayer for the day or for when you just can't think of anything to say to God. You may find various prayers to be profound, challenging, honest, and sometimes even humorous. The intent of each prayer is to help you on your journey with our Holy God. Sometimes we just want to chat with God. Tevye in the musical Fiddler on the Roof talks with the Lord God Almighty as if God is standing right there. Those prayers are real. Whatever seems to be on Tevye's mind at the moment is worthy of talking with God about. His prayers are gutsy, they are quirky, and if refrigerators existed, they might end up on one! It is in this spirit that many of the prayers in this book were written. God is both near and far. God is as close as our breath and as far as the stars or even beyond. God's relationship with us invites honest dialogue. Form and vocabulary are not as important as being real, owning the positives and negatives of our human condition, and yearning for a deep connection with our triune God. There is space under each printed prayer for you to make notes, jot down a word or two, or even doodle or sketch. I encourage you to use this space for whatever comes to your mind or spirit. May you find in these prayers whatever God wants to give you and whatever you are seeking in your journey of faith. May they resonate in the deep places of your heart, mind, and soul.
